There are three classic cases which I have identified –

1. You don’t understand –  you don’t learn –  you don’t implement = you suffer
2. You understand – But you don’t learn – and you don’t implement = you suffer
3. You understand – You learn – and you implement  = Health & Peace

I am still at ‘2’, been trying hard…very hard to be a ‘3’…..

I am sharing few things which I have learnt the hard way….needless to say I sometime try to implement them and some time I fail miserable (…most of the time)

1. Saying No- Arg!!! I simply hate myself for this….even though when my heart says no…my mouth gallops ahead to say YES. I guess the award goes to the helpful person who resides in me. I generally like to help people; it gives me a different satisfaction in life. I realized it’s a problem when I started saying yes even when I was busy. This left me tied to the chair day on day. I could simply never feel free or the work on my table subsided. I always felt like working 24 hrs a day. Slowly I stared realizing people really don’t come to me for help….they come to me for getting their work done (dumb me). They really never ever cared about my work….This is what made me change. I would like to thank my boss in this case where he really took it up to him to help me change. He advised me to drop the ball in his court if any one came to me for work. He would simply refused them saying he already had given he load to work on. This also made me say no….and thus I became the guy with the attitude – who does not help any one;|. But I am happy, for being a classic case & a source of inspiration / bread & butter for many - many who write about How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty…:)My advice to you all – If they do not care about your work they do not care about you – Carve this on your brain (contact me for brain surgeon’s details)
   
   
2. Over Stuffing myself   – How many time do you feel – ‘I should have stopped eating an hour ago’.  I like to believe that I am still very far from committing the sin of gluttony but my wife doesn’t let think so (Grrr!!).  To be honest I can’t resist god food. As soon as I can smell the aroma of good food the link between my stomach and brain starts to weaken. It’s break when I have my first bite. My biggest weakness – Pizza loaded with Cheese (even think about it makes me heavier) & Pav Bhaji (India Dish) – specially the one cooked by my mother….If she makes it during lunch…then I stuff myself during lunch time, a little during evening tea….then as dinner and the left over as morning breakfast….beat that.  Situation after this is – I can’t walk, I can’t sleep…sometimes I can’t breathe. It always happens, once I stop I start regretting on why I didn’t stop some half an hour back…

Things to do before you make & execute a Marketing Plan 

1. Market Study – Who, Where and Why is the questions which you need to answer here -
   • Who – Who will Buy it? Who Requires it?
   • Where are these people located?
   • Why do they need this?
2. Talk to your Customers & Prospects - This should be right on the top of your To-Do List. Understand your customer’s needs by communicating through any channel. Capture Customer feedback in any form….formal way or in formal way. Know what, why, how, where & when your customer think.  You can do this through -
   • Secondary Research
   • Survey – Telephonic or Face to Face or On-line
   • Focus Group discussion
3. Speak to your product / Service team – Discuss internal on the strengths of your product / service, discuss short falls etc. This will help you communicate the right attributes to the target and will avoid over commitment. 
4. Measurement & Feedback Capture System – Before you do your marketing plan think on how you will measure the impact / ROI / feedback. This has to be done in advance. Plan the measurement & feedback capturing system in advance, since no plans are perfect and need to be revised, the information captured through this always comes handy.

Your Marketing Plan should include the following -

1. An Introduction.
2. Background.
3. Market Review.
4. Consumer Insight – Expectation, Desire, Habits.
5. Plan / Strategy – Which should include certain objective which you want to accomplish and your execution plan.  
6. Other Elements which you should cover in your plan
   • Brand Name
   • Packaging
   • Pricing
   • Promotional Strategy
   • Distribution Strategy
7. Financial Projections
   • Capital Cost
   • Variable Expenditure
   • ROI
   • Break-even Analysis

Your plan does not end on the above points. Each step is a plan itself which has to be carefully crafted and executed. I will elobarte each and every step in coming blogs.

 2. Whether you can follow someone – To be a good leader you must be a good follower. Alfred Lord Tennyson said in his poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” – “Theirs not to reason why,

Theirs but to do & die, ” ….if all are would be leaders…who will follow?? (Quote: Myself- Swapnil P Patil)

 3. Delegate – It happens in most cases….Someone gets all the work in a team and some next to nothing….you as a leader should be able to delegate all work smartly. Distribute work in such a way that no one is over loaded….you will see the difference.

 4. Don’t Put all Eggs in One Basket – As a leader you are supposed to get work done from a group of people…..assign minimum two people on a task….by doing this you make sure you are not dependent of a singular person. If he falls sick or something comes up – work is not put on hold.
